Article on the Best Graduating student of the Univeristy of Lagos by Oluwaseun Adelakun.

When I got the mail this morning telling me how a girl wanted to publish her write up about a fellow girl's success story, I shook for a bit cause I know the trend with girls hehehe.

Read how Oluwaseun Adelakun a graduate of mass communication from the Nigerian institute of Journalism described Miss Ibok Favour Asuquo the best graduating student of the prestigious Univeristy of Lagos below

When there's more to beauty and charm, one begins to understand the substance a person is made of, especially in the case of a woman.

Here's the successful story of  Ibok Favour Asuquo, a 22-year-old from Akwa-Ibom state. She is the second of three girls and  attended Nigerian Navy Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools. She stays with her father,  a Laboratory Scientist and mum the Assistant Head Teacher in Nigerian Navy Primary School, Ojo. " I grew up with my parents in a naval barracks (my dad used to be a naval man), my parents provided for us in all aspects and am very grateful to them. I had nice teachers and friends."

Favour did not set out to be the best graduating student in her set, "the idea was to come out with a good result. So when I was called by counselling unit to prepare a convocation speech, I was shocked to my bones.. I didn't get over the shock till I was actually presenting d speech. I really thank God for seeing me through it all."
More when you continue.

After three attempts at JAMB, Favour opted for A-Level Cambridge examination, the result of which she used to gain admission into University of Lagos where she studied Accounting and graduated tops in 2012.

Just like every university student, Favour had her share of challenges and pressures which she over-came eventually. These obstacles obviously made her a better person. Really, she emerged Best Graduating Student 2012.  In her words, "well, there were challenges, but I always kept at the forefront of my mind the reason for being in school. So when the secondary reasons - cinemas, making friends, etc- start interrupting, I put dem aside. And that really helped me.

As regards peer pressure, I learnt when and how to say no. Always having in mind the primary reason for my stay in school, every other thing became secondary. If it wasn't necessary, it could be ignored."

Furthermore she says, " I watched out for my result. The thing about me is that I don't try to impress anyone. So If anyone watched out for my result I really don't know. But I constantly wanted to do better so I'll say I was the one pressuring myself. My parents did watch out for my result though, not to condemn or complain, just to encourage as they always do."

Its obviously no mistake that Favour is smart enough to know how to deal with issues that concerns her and being able to identify what really works for her. " I learnt not to move with the crowd and besides, I had awesome friends like Olawumi Olaitan, Lolade Oki, Agunu Joy, Tope Raheem that always pulled me back when I was getting carried away. God was always on my side."

In a description of herself, Favour says,  " I'm fun to be with, my friends say I'm funny. I'm very social but not a club kind of person." As for relaxing, she loves cinemas, salsa dance classes, window-shopping with  friends, going out to eat: "I love food", she adds.

The academic experience of an intelligent student is worth knowing and this is what she shares with us, " My unilag experience was fun. I met different people with different ideals and beliefs, made strong friendships that will last for eternity. I learnt how to tolerate different behaviours. It was fun and I learnt a lot, both academic and life lessons.

I had this awesome set of roomies in my final year in Moremi E202. We gisted a lot. They made my final year fun too.

I had good times with my friends, embarrassing moments and all."

Favour has become a role model to her peers and those coming behind. She is an example of what our nation needs to grow and develop. Of course, it's hard to imagine her going to places and getting involved in activities without making huge differences. As it is, she has made a giant stride that will undoubtedly pave way for her though it's one of the many a successful individual is expected to take.
