As he walked through the lonely bush path tired and weak from what felt like an aimless journey that had began more than 10markets days ago, he gazed up towards the sky, and finally he had come to a place he could relax and make a tent for the night. The breeze of the evening had set in and the leaves danced in high spirits as the coolness of the weather settled to usher in the night. He led bare backed on the sandy floor as the empty land was filled with so much emptiness he could hear so clearly the sound of the earth and any creeping insect that dared to come by.

Ochie had set out from where he called home in search of a better life about 10market days ago. He had crossed through the great river Oshimili and had walked more than 7 market days in the thick forest feeding on wild fruits and his stash of food he had put together from home. As one of the greatest farmers of his time with him was a white sack with yam seedlings, and tiny grains and fruits he had hoped to plant when he finally got a place to settle down. His weak feet were dancing for joy as they have finally gotten a place to lay and rest for the night. Ochie had no direction of where he was going and no destination but he had faith to find and settle in a place he would call his own and nurture for himself and his family. He had left his wife and young child at home to go and secure a better future for them. As he lay on the floor, all he could think of was the warmth he would have gotten from the embrace of his young wife and the pleasure of laying in her blossom. He sighed and turned continuously in major discomfort.

Ochie was a young strong hearted man from a village called Umu-Eri where young men were to be submissive to the old men of the village who had already dominated all the resources and lands that would have been useful to the coming generation. Because of their greedy and selfish ways, they believed the young men were sent by Chow the god of the skies to help them in their aging times while they were to sit and enjoy the benefits of their old age with no reward for the young ones who slaved daily in the sun to make a good harvest when the harvesting season came. “After all we worked very hard for our fathers when we were young and able, now are the time to reap the fruits of our labor”. Nri was the father of five young men of which Ochie happened to be the second of the wagon. He had worked so hard for his father and gotten no reward until one day he challenged his authority and got punished like a little child. He remembered how he had conquered the warring people of Offia and made a name for his father which gained him get respect as aguleri of Umu-Eri community and how his father had almost refused him marrying his wife with the excuse of marriage making him weak and less committed to serving him. He had learnt of the great saying of the people of old that parents were ones earthly gods but his father had become more than a tin god and he was out to stop living life for him. Since then he swore to make his way out of his father’s territory and form his own no matter what it caused.
